Community Sanitation Overview:
Alatna residents haul water and use honeybuckets or outhouses. None of the 12 occupied homes have plumbing. Major improvements are underway. A new water source was developed, and construction of a new sewage lagoon and a multi-purpose building (washeteria/health clinic)was about 90% completed in late 2005. Before start-up of the new facility, the water transmission line froze up and ANTHC shut down the project for the winter: work on the project has resumed, and should be completed before Fall 2006.In the meantime, residents are able to get water from the watering point near the well. Proposed future stages of the water/sewer project will include construction of a garage, and service lines to the homes. Electricity is provided by Alaska Power and Telephone; there is an intertie with Allakaket.
