Juneau:

AmeriCorps Members introduced and officially recognized for their many hours of national service within both the state House of Representatives and state Senate chambers, respectively.

On March 10, 2012, SAGA organized a large group photo of current and former AmeriCorps Members. One of the benefits of this event was to increase AmeriCorps Week awareness among the general public and especially former AmeriCorps Members. SAGA also partnered up with Juneau's Department of Parks and Recreation to organize a service-learning trail work event directly after the photo was taken.

SAGA members welcomed a 12 person delegation of AmeriCorps Members serving in Sitka to Juneau during AmeriCorps Week. The Sitka AmeriCorps Members stayed at SAGA facilities and participated in several SAGA AmeriCorps Week events.

Through the group picture, the service-learning trail work, and the time spent with the Sitka AmeriCorps Members, SAGA was able to connect AmeriCorps members and alums with each other so they feel they are a part of a nationwide effort.

SAGA's new Executive Director, Beverly Schoonover, along with SAGA AmeriCorps Connections Member Cody Koebnick appeared on KTOO's Juneau Afternoon radio show to promote AmeriCorps Week.

Serve Alaska VISTA Project

During the next year (2012-2013), Serve Alaska will be conducting a survey of assistance provided by national service to programs and agencies across the state working to alleviate poverty. The project will be executed by Serve Alaska AmeriCorps VISTA member Tenaya Lamon-Anderson. In addition to the survey, regional meetings will be set up in various places to gather further information from communities on how programming can be improved. Goals for this year-long project will be to identify gaps and overlap in services currently provided, as well as identifying what models of programs working with national service are working well and could possibly be replicated in other parts of the state. Findings of a final report will be presented at a State Community Service Commission meeting and will hopefully be a useful tool for them when assessing the national service programs providing assistance in the state.

New Class of Americorps Members Graduates in Anchorage

  • by Jackie Bartz Friday, January 22, 2010. ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Newly minted Americorps members will be launching volunteerism across the state in the weeks to come. The graduation was held Friday at the Millennium Hotel. The 35 graduates will go back to their communities to share what they've learned about a wide variety of local issues. From health and safety to education, the volunteers will get others inspired to help themselves.
"It's a positive ripple effect that can only encourage positive support systems and health and wellness all the way around, mental and physical," said Southeast Alaska graduate Annya Ritchie. One graduate plans to get funding for a greenhouse so her remote community can have access to fresh vegetables. There are also plans for rural recycling. Last year, Americorps members and volunteers racked up more than 16,000 hours of work throughout Alaska.
